Yes, 2 persons are enough to be termed "popular demand", and I hope it stays that way. Because as far as small corporations love to consult the feedback of their valuable customers and create great service and products that cater to the consumers' needs and wants, large companies tend to forget who the money they are earning comes from.

For instance, U**soft and Ap*le. And I hope this blog doesn't end up like those examples. (Right readers?)

That's for another time, when I'll discuss various companies from vastly different industries.

Ah bribery yes, that's what I wanted to talk about; here's an example:

Giant technology company I*t*l, the Furlada^[1]'s largest semiconductor chip maker has spent billions of Zenites^[2] bribing multiple giant computer manufacturers such as De*l and He*l**t-P**k*rd for exclusivity to their microprocessor used in the companies' OEM computers.

As of recently, OEM computers make up the majority of the Furlada's business and personal computers, and therefore it means that a large amount of microprocessor share would be taken by I*t*l Corporation just because of that.

Unfair no?

I'm afraid to even mention the other example, so let's just leave it as this for now.

I have constantly been frightened -- or I might even dare say horrified, by what seemed to me the true face of humanity through articles about certain scientific experiments carried out on multiple diverse groups of people from different cultures, backgrounds, social settings.

And it seemed to me that as long as it is not the subject's responsibility to answer for his own actions, despite having total free choice of choosing the "obviously morally right" action, an individual would chose the other action just because they are prompted to.

Abide the fact that the individuals protests, even without punishment for the choice of the "obviously morally right" option nor rewards for the opposite, only little further prompting is required for the individuals to do the latter.

So just imagine that somehow throughout the thousands of years of human civilization's evolution, the concept of taking responsibility for an action that takes advantage of another person's disadvantage with little work was never established, what would this world be like?

That might sound like I discourage competition if read the wrong way, but let's draw a line between competition and crime.

I am sure many agree that the race to obtain market share of certain products or services between corporations is competition, and is obviously healthy for the market, economy and the consumers' pockets.

However, what about the use of financial power to "discourage" market consumers to purchase from competing corporations?

That's what we call bribery to create unfair trade situations, and it is in fact against the law.

From the same basis of abusing power are other actions that are completely unrelated and are prohibited by laws all over the world, and this is action can be summarized as bully.

However, many such actions are not considered against the law, despite their basis of abusing certain forms of large advantage over another entity, yet entire "first-world nations" exercise this form of abuse and make it seem all necessary and morally right.

Looking through my old posts, I find this record of thoughts, sharing and impulse doings childish and sometimes, pointless. In comparison to another record of similar media written by another person, thought to be similar to myself, but yet vastly different on the inside, this record is "whiney".

That record can be found here, and I feel obliged to invite each one of you to read it, despite my disfavour of long essays in digital format with a small typeface.

Just recently, him and I spoke about capital and corporal punishment through the video game "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney", how law and jurisdiction systems work around the world; how they are flawed, and our personal thoughts on what could be better for the world.

We also discussed about how an "indecent" industry known as pornography could be used for a "decent" cause known as charity.

Jocularly, I dubbed it Come to Help.

We discussed many other things; for instance the topic of piracy and Digital Rights Management and their ethics.

But people don't see why he indulged in things that made him the the type of person who is described as ひきこもり (Hikikomori), or a parasite single.

He could play a pirated video game for an hour, and have thoughts that an average normal, healthy person whom contributes to society (and bought the game) of the same age, would cover in a month -- or I dare say, even a year.

But I think that this blessing was also a curse for him. For he tried to use video games and other things to suppress those thoughts, because they caused him guilt and dissatisfaction. And at the same time, it was a positive feedback of those thoughts, as the more he indulged, the more he felt that he was a burden to society and his parents.

And your average seventeen year-old down the street are still whining about how their lives are unfair, and how their part-time jobs fetched such low salaries compared to many others'.

Perhaps too much generalisation was involved in my judgement of "average people", but I found my dear friend very much an average guy. It was his choice to learn about the loopholes of society, the flaws of laws, and how the very world he lived in did not seem to be one that he belongs to.

So in a very inappropriate sense, I respect his choice for leaving, like how I respect his thoughts, his ideas, his friendship; because those were his choice as well.

Why does everybody else's part-time jobs always seem better than mine?

First, some office gave me a heavy workload (although I fell asleep in many occasions, which was extremely inappropriate). Even though I had an awesome someone who took care of me, the pay was just not worth it.

Then the self-proclaimed "Otaku" House which sold more nonsense than anything otaku made me stand in store to serve customers regarding everything non-otaku, and only called me down when they felt like it. On top of that, the pay was revolting.

After that came catering which was all around great.

Then someone else tells me that he sits in an office, type letters, chat on Instant Messaging and attend meetings to take down notes, and get paid more than I do.

Worse still, my sister just told me she gets paid $7 an hour for explaining some fuel offer to customers of a certain chain of petrol kiosk outlets.

Bah, I don't care anymore; just my luck.

Video Game Rant

Having played games with so many different visual styles, I've taken a liking to shading effects that actually bring out specific art styles rather than simply eye-candy.

Specifically, rather than paying graphical processing power for shaders to calculate fast fourier transformations for ocean waves, and making dynamic shadows look more "dynamic" by increasing its map texture size (expensive on video memory, and a mistake without actually blurring the shadow maps), I'll prefer using a fraction of that for rim-lighting or cel-shading.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy games for their game play value and plot as well, but immersing myself into a piece of art is a totally different experience. The interactivity, plot exploration, character development, visual and sound direction video games can make use of allows itself to be arguably the most powerful form of mass media.

I was complaining about shadows a while ago; while many games make use of shadow mapping, I feel that is not the best option if softening the shadow maps would be too expensive to process, hence the choice of leaving games released with hard and aliased shadows.

Let's not talk about older titles, even newer titles like Borderlands (No excuse for Unreal Engine 3, SSAO and cel-shading were added in), Need for Speed: Undercover (Game breaking ugly and slow, not that it was a good game), Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia 2008 (Beautiful games, with the latter using cel-shading).

Examples that used shadow maps well were Race Driver: GRID, Crysis/Warhead (with r_shadowjittering value of at least 2.0) and... nothing else I can think of at the moment.

I noticed that Screen Space Ambient Occlusion has this special ability to make some games look believable when shadows are turned off, as it creates depth in the 3D world portrayed by the 2D image displayed.

Due the the fact that shadows are actually the "occlusion" of light from reaching certain surface, it is only normal for me to hope that in the near future, occlusion would be the standard for shadow rendering, rather than using shadow maps. At least for the single global light, id est, the sun/moon. Shadows cast by flash lights can remain shadow mapped (Crysis, Half-Life 2: Episode 2)

I also read something interesting that the id Tech 4 engine (formerly Doom 3) used, Shadow Volumes. It appears to be very expensive to process due to the need for a stencil buffer and appears hard, but it is not aliased and is very accurate.

Woke up at some random hour and couldn't go back to sleep.

At least I could fall asleep in the first place, so it isn't so bad.

Tweaked Crysis Warhead and saved 2 different settings:
Quality priority to hardly playable state (minimum 25 FPS)
Quality priority to minimum of 35 FPS (That's real smooth for CryEngine2)

That took only 30 minutes, don't worry.

Yeah, I know I shouldn't play Crysis Warhead for the trees and the water; it ain't stupid as Crysis, but I still want the most out of the bought game and my 4870.

Then I typed this while listening to real music on my Denons plugged into the PC.

Real not as in encoded with Real Audio (it isn't a good codec anyway, it uses other codecs and call it theirs), but as in nothing trashy (... exyba... AHEM...wo... *cough*... niser... *cough*)

I appreciate the work of fan-subbers all over the world, but I have a few complains with soft-subtitle releases:

Typesetting:
        What's with Arial @ 36 pt, 0.4 pt spacing?
        Coloured shadows at full opacity.

Arial is alright.
Arial at 36 pt, 0.4 pt spacing, coloured border and shadows, fully opaque is not; it looks like Micro$oft Office's Word"Art".

Script:
        Different script resolutions in a single anime release.
        A "{\be1}" before every single bloody line.

I mean, RAWs are released in either 720p or 1080p nowadays, and 810p is relatively uncommon, I can understand when the script resolution is set to 640 x 360 for a 720p release, as subtitle renderers can render it well, and the subtitles will still stay very visible on portable devices such as an iPod on 320 x 180 after being hardsubbed during encoding, but I just don't understand 640 x 480 on 1080p releases.

Ok, as if that is not bad enough, the script for the next episode is set at 864 x something else. It's ridiculous.

After finding myself falling into slumber whilst consuming my usual, heavy dosage of trivial articles on the internet which I strangely, was forever interested in, I decided it's time to go to sleep.

I climbed onto the familiar bed mattress, atop it lay a strange choice of 2 cushions; 2 pillows wrapped by unsynchronised pillow covers and nothing else.

I held up my all-purpose cell phone to set alarm timings for the following morning; although I had nothing to attend to, and would have chosen to take a snooze of perhaps 4 to 5 hours; which would probably not be considered a snooze but a full morning nap a lazy cat would take.

I suddenly thought of the conversation I had with her a few thousand seconds ago regarding which animal I would describe her as. I chose the dog. It was fully out of instinct, rather than the usual attempt to think of the values she had, followed by linking them to an animal that people usually relate the values with in popular fables.

The screen read 09:00 am and 08:55 am for the 2 alarm timings. I wondered if that was enough sleep. I pressed the return button 5 times to bring up stand-by screen for a glance at the digital clock on the phone.

12:40am

8 hours should be more than enough for most people, but for a lazy cat such as myself, it would probably be insufficient. She chose to compare me with a cat for my sleeping habits anyway, I would agree with her wholeheartedly.

Why did I choose dog? Perhaps my memory brought forward my instincts to tell myself what I thought of her as.

Loyal and a good friend, yet had no qualms to bark at anyone who would pose a threat to her or her friends. Too jumpy at times though.

I guess I gave a good answer to her question.

I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep, yet found myself turning about in bed. I usually had no problem with falling asleep. Why have this been happening lately?

I found myself playing with my mental imagery and trying to paint what I would be seeing if I opened my eyes at that moment. I always found myself imagining my field of vision being wider than what I could actually see, but the what was on the absolute centre of my mental image and my vision when I opened my eyes was always spot on.

I can't decide whether I'm a person who sees the big picture more or whether I'm more observant regarding the details.

Then I noticed that my vision was filled with noise, like how a camera would capture a picture when its light sensor is turned to capture light at a higher speed, or what you would call ISO turned too high.

Strange, I didn't expect my vision to contain noise like how an electronic image sensor would.

I decided to continue playing with my mental imagery, and found that the exact "noise pattern" was "printed" on my mental image.

Perhaps my eyes has a certain shutter speed like cameras do, except it overlaps the data of the frames captured and form motion blur?

I playfully waved my palm in front of me against the window, outside was a common corridor lit by a low pressure sodium bulb.

Probably not, only focus due to the lens and ciliary muscles and aperture due to the iris would serve similar purposes.

Maybe I should read up on the mammalian eye on my next set of trivial articles.

I figured that I wouldn't be able to fall asleep, hence I got up and got into the kitchen for a little bite.

I flicked on the switch for the 4100k compact fluorescent lamp and sat down on the chair nearest to the kitchen entrance, facing the dining table. The first thing I saw was a plastic container containing mooncakes.

It was near the mid-autumn festival, so it would be expected to see these around the house. Not that I care to take notice of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, but I do see what happens around the neighbourhood and what's written on the trivial articles on the newspapers.

It just so happens that the month before was the 7^th month of the calendar when people burn joss paper on the grass to leave horrible brown destruction marks when the joss paper bins are right next them less than 1 metre away. Even the noise produced by the live shows, Chinese Opera and the bids for the Ghost Festival is so much less annoying; at least they are worth their cultural value and the money collected from the bids are used for Charity.

Not that I care about the grass so much, but I don't see the reason to do it at places which are inappropriate. If I had to, I would compare it to relieving yourself at the entrance of a public toilet.

I opened the container and found Pharaoh ants crawling around inside.

Tch.

I grabbed a piece of small sliced mooncake, examined it for the presence of ants; dead or alive, before taking a small bite out of it.

I examined the taste carefully, and confirmed to myself it authenticity of being what it's really called, "月餅" or literally moon biscuit, it had the sweet taste of Chinese pastry in the dense lotus seed paste. The fragrance of Chinese cakes radiates from its thin crust as well. It was then I recalled why I was against glutinous rice replacing traditional crust in mooncakes all over the world.

But then again recently, I have taken a liking to mochi.

I savoured the rest of the piece of mooncake while deciding what to do with these irritating little pests.

I placed the cover of the container on the table and placed the slices of mooncakes on it. I began knocking on the container and the cover to initiate panic in the ants. They started running all over the place.

I took out a new container that looked like it could actually seal the mooncakes properly, and placed the slices that had been fully evacuated of ants into it.

After placing the new container at the position where the older container was previously, I walked up to the sink and began washing. Then I recalled my mom nagging at me regarding the house being full of ants due to us placing food stuff around carelessly.

Darn you ants, you guys don't deserve my mercy.

I turned off the lights and went to the study. I had something to write on my blog, before I forget.

The time was 01:24 am.

I would title the blog post "2671s".

And that was how I spent 2671 seconds of my sleepless night.

Are many people still using screen resolutions of 1024 x 768? Because the last time I checked, net books already have a HD screen.

It's really a pain to try to squeeze all the elements so that people using smaller screens can still look at a site and say,
"Hey, I understand what's going on"

rather than,
"Hey, what's happening beyond the border of the page?"

It's actually the border of your screen, not the border of my page.

I mean the background image of this blog actually holds no really important purpose other than eye candy and maybe tells you a little about what i'm into recently and perhaps a little of my mood; hell, it changes more often than I write new posts!

So due to users of smaller screens, the "eye candy" has to be squeezed so tightly to the point that it's now like a low resolution scan of a piece of art meant for a Wikipedia article.

So you ask me, since it's just eye candy, why not just ignore the small screens/remove it altogether?

I don't want my blog to look so freaking boring cuz I'm not really a image blogger, so there will be a lack of images; the background image would help a lot.

Ignoring small screen users would be worse, it's like there are reader coming to see your blog, but are treated as "less important" readers. That's not what I'm implying, and never will.

I don't blame you at all, small screen users, I'm just frustrated. This site would probably look like crap now to 24" or larger screen owners.

Sigh

I'm actually glad that they did not adapt Disappearance into this season, mind you it wasn't due to the fact that I supported the Endless hell, but every time I read through the Disappearance, I get even more absorbed and emotionally attached to the story, and for the anime to do that, you would need at least 5 episodes for the Disappearance arc.

Sigh couldn't possible be finished in 1 episode, hence if Kadokawa decided to do this for the 2009 new episodes:

I more I read the light novel, the less I can get over what has already happened. The awesome story is already there, what's so damn hard? It isn't even you who has to animate it; Kyoani (whom I guess are quietly doing things against their own will) is doing all hard work.

Suzumiya Haruhi anime is really losing its touch as an awesome anime due to its pacing; it doesn't need 4 full episodes to show the filming of The Adventures of Asahina Mikuru Episode 00.

Although it isn't a slow paced anime yet(think Dragonball Z), season one was fast, yet not lacking detail (ignoring Someday in the Rain, despite that particular episode's artistic value :P).

After the screw up of Endless Eight, they really will need season three for half of the original fan base to come back..

But do watch Suzumiya Haruhi no Tameiki 3 (The Sigh of Suzumiya Haruhi 3) for some awesome Nagato action!

Was "I Not Stupid Too" simply entertainment for Singaporeans?
I'm sure there are lessons to be learnt from that movie,
but parents just seem to fuck up their responsibilities as parents.

I know you people have stress as well,
but all I ever see you do for your children is to scold them and think they do not understand the stress you are facing.

Is your comprehension of your child's academic's progress is all that matters about the growth of your child?

You may say, hey, I do look at their moral education, they don't ever show respect.

Ask yourself, do you ever lower your voice and ask your child,
"Why are you doing this?"

Do you deserve the "respect" your kids are supposed to give you?

Don't be mistaken, I'm not the average brat who screams at my parents and shut them up the moment they nag. But apparently parents do not see the positive side of their children, let alone praise them for anything and give them moral support.

But I don't see why my some of my friends deserve the treatment from their own parents when all they do is take a break from studying, and going out to chill for an hour or two.

We all need to chill and think about it.

Went to yuki's house to repair her Celeron D. Appearantly it became so much faster that she and her mom was pretty impressed.

She even hugged me after she felt the improvement xD

I'm not sure but all I did was removing 2 malwares, uninstalling Norton Anti-virus and some other useless applications, disabled worthless automatic updates and a disk defragmentation.

Some people might think it's putting the system open to viruses, worms and even bugs(*cough* service pack *cough* M$ *cough*)

But hey, when Norton can't do anything against MSN viruses and malwares that even I could find without any form of scanning, what is it useful for other than munching down system resources?

Use a more secure browser, maybe Chrome or Firefox, and don't visit nonsense websites that requires you to install toolbars for free emulator roms or mp3s.

And last of all, destroy your copy of limewire. Now.

Alternatively, you could try Linux or Mac :D

This relationship is sounding very emo-ish. We're actually very happy, but we both almost always only blog about the emo stuff.

Every night she calls at around 1am and we talk while half asleep, stretching and yawning and replying to each other's silly questions sleepily.

And I'm always trying to convince her to sleep because she has a paper the following morning, half-heartedly because I cannot bear to part with her voice.

It's so confusing.
It's so sweet.

Somehow I don't miss being single at all. There are its good points, but nah; having someone whom you loves so much love you back, it's unbeatable.

Sometimes I look back at my past, and found only small fragments of myself now in those vivid yet blurred memories.

Have I changed that much?

But looking back and thinking about it once again, it was who I was, the people around me and the situations I found myself in made me who I am now.

I am thankful.

However, I cannot even find the motivation to look for a goal in life.

Even if there in an interest in doing something, the passion that was there in the me of my memories is now gone.

It's no longer a passion. It's something I do not mind doing.

But whenever I think of people around me, how they support me and how they want to help me, I feel somewhat motivated.

At least there is a trace of motivation.
At least there are people I can look at whilst pursuing my "passion".

I can't give up, even though they're not doing it for their own sake, but at least I can try my best in order not to disappoint them.
